Abstract EN

The research aims to identify the water resources in the Kurdistan region, their characteristics and the challenges they face, in order to the rational and scientific planning of its management.

to achieve the objectives of the research, it was classified as follows: the first axis: the water resources in the Kurdistan region and their characteristics.

the second axis: the challenges facing the water resources in the Kurdistan region.

the third axis: the principles and characteristics that should be taken into account when planning water resources in the Kurdistan region.

the study reached the following results: 1-the annual rate of (renewable water) in the Kurdistan region, which is characterized by its great spatial contrast and variation, reaches more than (24) billion m3.

2-the annual revenues of Kurdistan region rivers discharge, which are characterized by their great fluctuations, amounted to (36.3) billion/m3, (17.58) billion/m3 of the revenues of the Tigris tributaries and (18.76) billion/m3 of revenues from the Tigris.

3-(42.3%) of the water revenues of the Tigris tributaries and all waters of the Tigris River from outside the Kurdistan region.

4-the waters of the Kurdistan region face serious challenges, most notably: (the continuous increase in the demand for water and the decrease in the water supply, the water policy of turkey and Iran, climatic changes, groundwater depletion, waste of water, poor water infrastructure and the absence of comprehensive planning for the management of water resources).

5-proper planning for the management of water resources in the Kurdistan region is done through the development of plans that take into account the general and specific principles of water management and address the water problems of the region and Iraq.
