This paper aims at studying M.H.

Haikal ( 188g-1956 ) as a literary criric and tries to investigate the sources underlying his perspective, especially the method of the French critic Hippolyte Taine (1s28 - 1893 ) and its impact on Haikal, who adopted the objective method, which lends to put aside every pesonal or emotional element while analyzing the literary work.

Moreover the study discusses Haikal's perspective of national literature showing the main elements in this theory .

The study also shows the turning points in Haikal's thought and how they affected his critical perspective
