Abstract EN

The purposes of this study were to identify the, characteristics of modal personality for American and Japanese people as viewed by Mu'tah students, as well as to investigate the relationship between the American modal personality and that of the Japanese as viewed by the chosen sample.

To collect the data needed to achieve the goals of the study, an instrument was developed that was made of two similar sections, each-section comproising (31) items.

As well, an open question was asked to a random sample of (100) students to ensure the psychometric issues of this instrument.

The results of the study based on analyzing the responses of (496) students from both sexes of different majors and academic years, have shown that the basic characteristics positively viewed in both American and Japanese modal personality were: Willingness to learn, job commitment, knowledgabilty, democracy and open mindedness, seeking wealth, and following general safety rules.

Characteristics include short handedness, dishonor, mistrust of others, and unextended family (broken family) were negatively viewed and found common in both personalities.

The results have also indicated that there was a significant correlation (P = 0.48, a = 0.05) between the American modal personality and that of the Japanese as evaluated by Mu'tah students.

It also revealed that there was a high correlation (P = 0.53, a = 0.05) between mass media watching hours and the evaluation of both American and Japanese modal personality.

Results have been discussed in terms of cultural context, and recommendations were addressed accordingly.
