تضمن الدراسة بحث دور الثوم (Allium sativum) Garlic في الوقاية من التأثيرات السمية للأشعة المؤينة في الفأر الأبيض (Balb/c).
تم تحليل التأثيرات السمية لأشعة جاما من خلال تقدير مؤشر الانقسام (MI) لخلايا نقي العظم (bone marrow) و الخلايا الجنسية (germ cells).
و كذلك تقدير الفعالية النوعية لأنزيم (GR) Glutathione Reeducates في خلايا كبد الفأر.
و اتضح من الدراسة أن لمستخلصات الثوم الكحولية و زيت الثوم (الألين) دوراً في تثبيط التأثيرات السمية الوراثية لأشعة كاما.
و عند المعاملة بالمستخلص الكحولي قبل التعرض لأشعة كاما ارتفعت الفعالية النوعية للأنزيم (GR) إلى 8.14 و هي زيادة معنوية مقارنة بالفعالية الأنزيمية (1.56) للسيطرة السالبة (بدون معاملة) أو مقارنة بفعالية (306) عند التعرض لأشعة كاما فقط.
مما يشير إلى أن الثوم من المواد المضادة للتطفير خارج الخلية (Desmutagen) بالمرتبة الأولى ثم من المواد المضادة للتطفير داخل الخلية (Bioantimutagen) بالمرتبة الثانية.

a MMrai i The Study is designed lo investigate (he effect of garlic (Allium sativum) in (he inhibition of genctoxic effects of ionizing radiation in mice (Knlb/c strain) The gcnotoxic effects of Gamma-radiation (1(H) rad) on somatic cells (bone marrow), and geim cells were cyiogenciically analyzed by determining (he Mitotic Index (Ml).
The specific activity of Glutathione Reductase enzyme was determinedmin liver cell' homogcnatc of irradiated mice.
The data revealed that garlic alcoholic extract and the garlic oil (Allin) were able to protect the cells against genotoxic effects of Gumma irradiation.
Treatment of mice with alcohlic extract of garlic before irradiation results in an increase in the activity of The results suggest that garlic is clasMficd as a desmuiagcn and then as a Bioantimutagcn
