Responsible of the choice of the title?", certainly not.
Nevertheless Mohamed Arkoun is the author of this instructive text on tolerance and intolerance in the Islamic tradition which is in fact the presentation he made at the Carthage conference (Tunisia) on April 20 -23 -1995.
this question has been treated from two great perspectives : the religious and the modem reasons, and tolerance, intolerance, intolerable.
In fact, as stated by the author, tolerance and intolerance can only be treated by way of broadening the historical research and the philosophical analysis reaching the epistemological limits of the religious reason in general.
Religion and ideology are not always well-determined, however.
In addition to that ambiguity, there's the problem of placing tolerance at a critical distance to define its genecology, its levels, and its aims without taking into consideration, from the start, the dialectic tensions which relate it to intolerance and the intolerable.
Finally, the author argues for a participating tolerance which requires the practice of a pedagogy exploring what is called by the author the greco-semetic space as a place of emergence, circulation, and elaboration of religious symbolics, systems of thinking on which still depend not only the three monotheistic traditions but also the most durable and well-shared principles of secularized Europe.

"Responsable du choix du titre ?", certes pas mais toujours est-il que Mohamed Arkoun est l'auteur de ce texte instructif sur la tolérance et l'intolérance dans la tradition islamique qui est en réalité la communication qu'il a présentée à la Conférence de Carthage (Tunisie) sur la tolérance (20-23 Avril 1995).
Ce sujet est traité en deux grands axes, à savoir : la raison religieuse et la raison moderne; et tolérance, intolérance, intolérable.
En effet comme l'affirme l'auteur la tolérance et l'intolérance ne peuvent être traitées qu'en élargissant l'enquête historique et l'analyse philosophique aux limites épistémologiques de la raison religieuse en général.
Toutefois, une précision de taille s'impose à ce niveau car les frontières entre religion et idéologie ne sont pas toujours bien tracées.
A cette ambiguïté s'ajoute le problème de mettre la tolérance à distance critique pour déterminer sa généalogie, ses niveaux, ses visées sans prendre en compte, dès le départ, les tensions dialectiques qui la lient à l'intolérance et à l'intolérable.
Enfin, l'auteur prône une tolérance participante qui requiert de pratiquer une pédagogie en explorant ce qu'appelle l'auteur l'espace gréco-sémétique comme lieu d'émergence, de circulation, d'élaboration des symboliques religieuses, des systèmes de pensée dont dépendent aujourd'hui encore les trois traditions monothéistes, mais aussi les valeurs les plus durables et les mieux partagées de l'Europe sécularisée..
