Abstract EN

The Dictionary of "Asasul-Balaagah" by Al-Zamakhshari is deemed by the majority of scholrs of linguistics as the first famous Arabic Dictionary, in which the new Alphabetical order was followed strictly by authors.

This Dictionary of language is characterised by certain unique lingual characteristics which make it a pioneer dictionary in certain respects; hence, it was appreciated and given due care from modern scholars and old ones alike and it was published more than once.

Among the different issues of this dictionary, we chose the one which we used in our teaching Arabic lexicography in the Arabic section in the university, i.e.

the issue edited by Abdul Raheem Mahmoud, with an introduction by Ameen Alkhuli, and published by Dar - Elma’rifah - Beirut, 1979.

In the long period we spent with this dictionary and taking into consideration its uniqueness in its method, properties and linguistic treatment of items, we were upset by the fact that it contains many mistakes; these can be classified under the headings of Tashiif, Tahriif, or inaccuracy of orthography, both in poetical or prose texts.

We consider that leaving such errors in this important linguistic reference may cause ambiguity and misunderstanding not only to begin-ners but also scholars with advanced knowledge of Arabic.

In this parer, we have registered some of the errors which we noticed hoping that this will help in correcting this important dicitonary, so that its new editions may serve the Arabic reader better.
