Abstract EN

The paper reviews the Jordanian Government’s attempts to formulate a National Information policy for science and technology since early 1960s.

Strategies to excute this policy were formulated through two approaches: The first was represented by establishing the “Scientific Research Council’” and then the “Directorate of Science and Technology” in the Ministry of Planning.

Research facilities were developed in a mum be r of academic, scientific, and research establishments during 1960 - 1985.

The second approach followed the “Open Policy for Science and Technology” where the “Higher Council for Science and Technology” was established in 1987.

Then, the Royal Scientific Society became an integral part of it.

The paper also looks onto Jordan’s attempts and proposals to establish a “National Information System - NIS”, which was superseded by the “National Information Center - NIC”, in 1993.
