Takayasu’s arteritis as a cause of peripheral vascular insufficiency : a case report

Takayasu’s arteritis is a granulomatous vasculitis of nknown aetiology that affects medium and large arteries.

It usually affects women under 40yrs (ten times more than men).

Takayasu’s typical features reflect ischaemia or aneurysm formation in large vessels i.

e.

the aorta and its branches.

The case we report is of a 39 year old male with intermittent claudication that progressed to acute ischaemia of the lower limbs and resulted in surgical intervention prior to a definitive diagnosis of arteritis having been made.

It highlights a case of arteritis that has been difficult to classify, and to control.
