Abstract EN

The article begins with a brief historical background on development of hospital Libraries in the World, and then explains the nature and type of services rendered by them.

Among the services mentioned are: provision of technical books for medical staff, recreational books and nonbook materials for patients, writing personal letters to patients and visiting them.

The article explains also the location and building, equipment and furniture, library collection, manpower, management and budget comprise the basic elements required for successful services of hospital libraries.

Finally, in order to activate hospital library services in the Arab World, it recommends the establishment of a nucleus library in each hospital, promote cooperation among all libraries concerned, organization of programs, issuing regulations to encourage the establishment and use of hospital libraries, and utilizing reserarch studies on hospital library services.
