Abstract EN

This study is an attempt to look at Arabic Syntax from the point of view of al-Jurjani who considers meaning the basis for understanding any syntactic structure.

Based on this perspective, the separating pronoun doesn't signify a certain fixed meaning all the time; rather, it changes its meaning according to different situational contexts.

Surat Yousef is chosen here as to trace this pronoun and its variants, placing special emphasis on its semantic denotations.

This pronoun was spotted in seven different places, following four recurring variants.

The analysis of the separating pronoun in these different contexts led to the conclusion that this pronoun should be classified as an emphatic word in the boarder sense of the term, as it emphasizes meaning and boosts the truthful conditions of the structure in which it figures in.

The use of this pronoun, apart from the concomitant structural changes it entails, serves other discursive purposes, as it discloses the type of relationship between the speaker and the listener.

The analysis also revealed that the speech variations, which employ the separating pronoun, have its own structural peculiarities that represent special regular patterns, befitting certain specific situational contexts, and certain specific communicative situations.
