Abstract EN

This paper investigates how Critical Arabic Tradition viewed the functions realized by a text.

Four functions are recognized: communicative, affective or persuasive, moral or educative, and epistemological.

The paper is an attempt at investigating the origin of these functions; it adopts an aesthetic approach, as a basis for text spreading and its acceptance by the hearer / reader.

The investigation is confined to the traditional perspective.

It does not compare this approach with corresponding views of modern theories of criticism and linguistics in the same field.

Such comparison may be tackled by future research work.
