اللام الزائدة في "زيدل" و "عبدل" : دراسة مقارنة في ضوء المصادر و الكتابات العربية، و السامية، و اليونانية القديمة

Abstract EN

Old Arabic linguists have pointed out that the “lam” letter in “Zaydal” and “Abdal” as redundant, suggesting that in the former it means "Zayd11 and in the latter "Abd".

They attributed such a judgment in adding this letter to both names to its overuse, It is redundant in these two examples because "Zayd" and " ’Abd" are.more commonly used than "Zaydal" and " 'Abdal", respectively.

However, Abu el-Hasan al-Akhfash deviated from the mainstream of Ancient Arabic linguists by underlining that the "lain" in these two nouns is a short form of the second part of the compound noun of "Abd al-laah" and "Zayd al-laah".

With respect to modem discoveries of old Arabic, Semitic and Greek writings, this study aims at examining the historical development of these two names from the stage of combination to that of abbreviation.

The main contribution of this study is to finds out that the “lam” is not redundant but a short form of "-al-laah" compounded with "Zayd" and "Abd".
