English Abstract
The research problem stems from the failure of Universities to take up the function of correcting and directing student values in accordance with educational and societal aims.
This function contains four components :(1) student interest in his future occupation (2) educational pursuit (3) motivation to study and (4) interaction with the social environment.
Based on these components a questionnaire was designed and administred to all agriculture students in their first year at the University of Tikrit and was administered again to the same students after four years in 1996 / 1997 in order to find out what changes , if any, were the result of the University environment.
The results showed that most values, as averages, were very close in both years which indicated that the University environment had no influence on student values, In fact some values became more negative int both educational and occupational areas.
But the difference between first and fourth years averages was not significant.
However there was significant diffference between component occupational values in both years and between component educational values in fourth years.
The study concluded that the negative values of students after four years of study pinpoint to the existence of awide cleavage in the process of social change due to the fact that neither the society nor the Universities possess aclear philosophy of planned social change.
The study recommends certain mechanisms which include: establishing extension units in every department, University field days, curriculum changes to include rural sociology and extension courses in all departments, linking the University to an “extension village” as a social Laboratory, and training of students at the farm level.
