Plutonium (Pu) is a synthetic radioactive element.
All of its isotopes are radioactive.
It occurs in nature-in traces only-around ores containing uranium.
Due its fissile nature plutonium found extensive applications in military warfare.
Extensive studies have been carried out to understand its physical and chemical characteristics in such a way that it became the most amply studied element in the table of elements.
In the present article, the methods of preparation and separation of plutonium from irradiated uranium, as well as the worldwide inventory of plutonium, have been given.
Moreover, the hazardous effects of plutonium contamination have been also treated.
