A study of Polonium-210 and Lead -210 contents of tobacco has a great importance because of the increase in the incidence of lung cancer observed among smokers.
The carcinogenic effect of ZiUPo and ZiUPb with respect to lung cancer is an important problem in many countries with very high cigarette consumption.
Naturally occurring primordial radionuclides of the uranium-radium series have long been associated with tobacco plants.
The properties and distribution of trichomes on tobacco leaf surfaces suggest that they are effective collectors of small particles.
It was reported that for an individual smoking two packages of cigarettes a day, the radiation dose to bronchial epithelium from 10Po inhaled in cigarette smoking probably is at least seven times that from background sources.
The effective dose of persons who smoke one or more packs per day of low quality brands is much higher than that resulting from intake with food and water.
This indicates that smoke absorbed through the respiratory system is 910 910 the main source and the principal pathway of Po and Pb intake.
Cigarette smoking can be the reason for the higher incidence of cancer of all organs of the respiratory system.
