Abstract EN
With the era of globalization, English became the first international language of communication in various fields such as commerce, science and information.
Different countries in the World therefore need to resort to this language even at the expense of their own native languages.
French, like all other languages, is submerged by this trend, and its role may be negatively affected.
The present study consists of five parts : The first one is an historical background introducing the status of French in the world and its relations with English: from the beginning of the Middle ages till the end of World War II with the emergence of “American English”.
The second part is a linguistic and sociolinguistic study of the different types of anglicisms in French; the third part deals with the scope of this influence and the reactions of French speaking people; the fourth part is a review of the main dates of the cooperation which led to the establishment of Francophone institutions.
Finally, the fifth and last part deals with the opinions and recommendations of a number of specialists in order to face up to this phenomenon, which is perceived as a danger of impoverishment.
