The present research is concerned with the image of brackish water in Dhur-rumma's Divan (collected poems) in which the poet refers frequently to that water along with his mistresses, especially Mai.

The water would be fresh if he had a pleasant rendezvous or vice versa.

He likens the brackish water to the amniotic fluid, the liquid surrounding the fetus.

He would get to and leave the water basin athirst, which is symbolic of what he experienced during his meeting with Mai.

The water never quenched his thirst, nor did his rendezvous with his mistress.

Hence, water symbolizes his love affair.

He died athirst for both love and fresh water.

He could no longer get in touch with Mai, for she married someone else.

Without drinking, he resigned his spirit by the basin of the brackish water.
