Abstract EN

This study discussed the subject of family counseling in Jordan from two angels.

The first is related to the stages of family counseling in Jordan and the relationship between knowledge and practice.

The second subject is related to the difficulties facing the profession of family counseling in Jordan.

In relation to the first subject, the study illustrated that family counseling in Jordan went through three stages.

These stages included, in order, informal counseling in traditional Jordanian society which is practiced through the family, relatives, friends, and neighbors.

The second stage is the transitional stage of unspecializcd formal counseling in the Jordanian society which is practiced by many charitable organizations.

The last stage represents the beginning of professional family counseling which is practiced in modem society.

In relation to the second subject, the study illustrated the possibility of understanding difficulties that face the profession of family counseling in Jordan from a structural-functional perspective.

These difficulties are related to many components, including family counselor, the family, mass media, as well as professional, cultural, institutional, legal, and economic difficulties.

Finally, the study presented some recommendations to enhance the level of family counseling profession in Jordan, taking into consideration the requirements of the modem Jordanian society.
