Abstract EN
Aim of the study : Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) appears to be the most reliable material for the construction of dental appliance.
The effect of filler on water sorption was investigated in this study, where such factor played an important role in determining the useful life of any denture base material.
Materials and methods : Different types of fillers were used : such as Kevlar (6 %), glass (5 %) fibers by weight in mat and unidirectional forms.
Also zirconium oxide (5%) was used as particles, which was added to acrylic resin.
Water sorption was measured in (mg) per unit area and per unit volume, for scheduled periods of three month (first day, and once weekly).
Results : The results showed that the presence of filler decreased the water sorption of PMMA while the fiber form had no effect on water sorption.
Conclusion : Samples containing zirconia results in least amount of water sorption.
