Abstract EN
Aims of the study : Tooth size assessment and Bolton analysis are very important diagnostic tools to be considered when diagnosing, planning and predicting prognosis in clinical orthodontics.
Anticipating the amount of space needed to correct crowded arches assists in deciding the most favorable method for space creation and treatment mechanics.
The aim of the study is to compare mesiodistal crown width, anterior and overall Bolton ratio between male and female and between right and left sides for both upper and lower arches of Iraqi subjects with class I malocclusion and crowding.
Materials and methods : Thirty pairs of dental casts (15 males, 15 females) were selected.
Mesiodistal crown width and Bolton’s overall and anterior ratios were measured and analyzed in subjects with class I Angle classification with crowded upper and lower arches.
Result : No significant differences between the width of teeth on the right and left sides of the aches for upper and lower jaws in both sexes.
Also no significant differences were observed between males and females regarding Bolton ratios (anterior and overall).
However significant differences were found in crown width between males and females on upper and lower premolars and upper molars.
Conclusion : Assessment of proper relationship of the total mesiodistal width of the maxillary dentition to the mesiodistal width of the mandible dentition during the diagnostic phase of treatment will favor an optimal post treatment occlusion.
