Abstract EN

This study aimed at determining the impact of agricultural practices and climatic changes on desertification in the East Nile locality - Khartoum state, through studying the socio-economic characteristics of the farmers, identifying and analyzing their applied agricultural practices and examining climatic changes that happened during the last fourty years and farmers' role in combating desertification.

Two types of structural questionnaires were used to collect data from two groups of farmers from the Eastern Nile Locality.

The sampling techniques were; accidental sampling which was employed to collect data from 150 respondents (farmers) and selective sampling to collect data from 55 selected farmers who exceed 60 years of age.

Simple statistics were used to attain the stated objectives.

The results revealed that there is an evidence of desertification and land deterioration resulting from Man practices (such as small land size, inappropriate land preparation and in suitable irrigation methods and cultivated crops), besides, the long mono-cropping even though those farmers had long working experiences.

Further, the study revealed an inverse effect of climatic changes that happened during the last fourty years on desertification as the majority of farmers assured increasing level of each of the following items; temperature, winds speed, and floods and fluctuating rainfalls.

Also the study showed farmers' unawareness of the importance for planting wind breaks.
