Abstract EN

The main objective of this study is to provide information on the nutritional status (N.S) [weight, height, skin fold thickness, thickness triceps (SKFT) and food intake of 5 – 15 years old basic school Governmental and Private Sudanese pupils in Khartoum State, and to compare it with standards of the WHO - NCHs references.

The determinant and their N.S included: socioeconomic, physical activities and health status for a total of 725 pupils.

The results showed that N.S of governmental and private school pupils is significantly different (P≤ 0.05) of under weight [<-1 SD W/A] (49 % male, 44 % female) in governmental.

Compared to (33.3 % male, 44 % female) in private schools, and thinness (SKFK 5th percentile) for governmental (2.8 % male, 2.4 % female) schools and not found in private schools.

There was no significant difference for stunting (<- 1 SD H/A).

The study revealed that the most important determinants of the pupils N.S were the pupil’s parents' education, parents' profession, living condition and physical activities.

The distribution of the diseases especially respiratory infections and malaria occurs in significantly higher level in governmental schools (35.5 % and 25 % respectively) compared to private ones (25 % and 10.3 % respectively).

The study also showed that there was a significant difference (P≤ 0.05) between governmental and private school pupils in dietary intake of all of food groups (carbohydrates, legumes, vegetables, milk, milk products and eggs, fruits and fruit juices and beverages).
