English Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of using flashcards on sixth grade students' achievement in English vocabulary in Ibn Zaidoon School for boys and Al Sabea Wa Athalathon school for girls in Tabouk.

To achieve the purpose of the study, a pre / post-test of twenty nine items on English language vocabulary.

The sample of the study consisted of 149 sixth grade students ; 73 male students and 76 female students from Ibn Zaidoon School for boys and Al Sabea Wa Athalathon School for girls in Tabouk during the second semester 2010 / 2011. The participants of the study were distributed into four groups (two female groups experimental and control, and two male groups (experimental and control).

The experimental groups were taught English vocabulary using flashcards while the control groups were taught using the conventional methods.

Descriptive statistical analyses were used (means and standard deviation) for the pre and post- tests of students' English vocabulary.

Comparison statistical methods were used (Two Way ANOVA) analysis of variance to make a comparison between the control and the experimental groups and gender variable. The findings of the study indicated that there were statistically significant differences in the post- test between the control and the experimental groups in favor of the experimental group, and there was no statistically significant difference in the students' achievement due to gender.

The researcher concluded with recommendations to enhance the effect of using flashcards for teaching English vocabulary on students' achievement in English vocabulary such as conducting further studies on other populations and for a longer period of time.
