English Abstract

-Reservoirs sedimentation is one of the severe problems which facing dams because sediments take space within these reservoirs and accumulated causing decreasing of life water storage which is the main purpose of dams construction.

Jordan is one of the countries which is suffering from persistent water shortage, so the existing Dams in Jordan represent a strategically source of water demand, and the sedimentation at these dams must be studied to asses and decrease the quantity of sediments which reach to these reservoirs.

In the present study Mujib dam which was constructed in 2003 and allocated at the Kings Highway between Karak and Ma'daba governorates has been selected to estimate the quantity of sediment reached to it's reservoir during the period between Nov-2003 to Dec-2006.

AVSWAT (Arc-Veiw Soil and Water Assessment Tool) 2000 model has been used to simulate Mujib Dam Catchment area.

This model uses GIS (Geographic Information System) interface tool and needs GIS layer for soil, land cover, elevation, the results of this study identified the quantity of water and sediment inflow to the reservoir, also identified the regions of high soil erosion, sediment yield, and delivery ratio in order to manage these regions by applying techniques which reduce these values in sequence to decrease the sediment yield reaches to the reservoir.
