English Abstract

There are a number of techniques to adapt Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol (TCP / IP) to Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network environments because of high speed communication offered by ATM and the reliability of TCP / IP.

There is performance degradation problem where the reason for that problem is packet fragmentation, which is the result of ATM 53-Byte cell oriented switching architecture, in this thesis, a suggested algorithm is designed that operates at ATM Adaptation Layer 5 (AAL5) laver this algorithm is named Adding Identification number and Matching (AIDM) algorithm.

The resulting transport protocol from using AIDM algorithm is an Improved of the TCP Reno.

AIDM is an efficient recovering technique that attempts to make TCP \ IP performance less sensitive to cell losses.

In this thesis, AIDM is presented and a simulation result is compared with other adaptation of TCPMP over ATM as TCP Reno.

Visual Basic (VH6) programming language is used for coding TCP traffic over ATM simulator program that explains how AIDM algorithm operates at the AAL5 layer and how it is used to enhance network performance and reduce the period of time required to recover the damaged cells in comparison with TCP Reno.

The performance is enhanced about 20.53 % as average of the enhancement rates of the given samples.
