English Abstract

This thesis introduces a new model (Essay-Model) to support bi-temporal databases over conventional databases as stratum approach along with auditing capabilities.

It is implemented as a separated layer integrated with existing systems.

The introduced model eliminates the problems of horizontal temporal anomaly and vertical temporal anomaly.

Essay-Model is in first normal form, it is based on homogeneous tuple time-stamp relation and can support the heterogonous tuple time-stamp.

From a software engineering point of view, Essay-Model provides a set of benefits such as: Sparing the database designer and programmers from concerning about how to realize the temporal and auditing requirement of the Business Logic Schema, integrating easily with a running database without the need to restructure the database, providing a configurable solution, in which it can be modified to become an bi-temporal database, transaction database, tracking log, or audit-guard database.

To enhance user’s tasks and overall system’s quality, new concepts in temporality were introduced.

The model also supports the physical delete to support the business policy to improve the performance of database with maintaining the deleted object.

Essay-Model improves the performance of the memory storage and time of query processing over Tuple Time-Stamping Multiple Relation (TTMR) model.

The improvement ratio was around 40.44 % in storage, around 53.64 % in point query, 56.12 % in join query, 90 % in aggregation query, and 88.43 % in range query.
