L’art public en Algérie

To estimate the artistic work in the public place and criticize historic monuments within a period of time where violence reigns and identical confusion is an audacious access.

But, we have to discuss it fearing that, our environment empties of beauty and that history has a grudge against us for having marked the national heritage of ugliness.

This publication is a modest intervention in the large theme of the public art which hasn’t all the merit in the current events of architecture and town planning. We perceive in our daily courses, at the level of crossroads and traffic circles, artistic works such as monuments, steles, and diverse plastic compositions which, in my opinion, have no sense of esthetics and their supposed representation in a public place.

Commemorative, symbolic, decorative, monuments came towards the public to touch him through their forms, and teach him their stories.

However, cities in Algerian are neither enough beautiful nor enough intelligent.

They do not rise up emotion of the observer and do not mark his memory.

These architectural demonstrations and plastic works should be discussed in a most serious way because they touch inevitably the architectural image of the city and the cultural heritage of the society.

The present paper tries exactly to draw the attention of the architects, the artists, the inhabitants and the public authorities on the quality of plastic works which set up themselves here and there over Algeria and also on the importance of the public art’s integration within the urban planning in the country.
