Abstract EN

Being impressed by the western Iiterary ,critical , and philosophical trends ,several Arabic scholars suffered from a critical situation immediately after the Arab renaissance in the second half of the 19th century .

It was the issue of proving the Arabic identity .

That is why , thpse men rejected what they called the sterile tradition and turned to a new approach that might satisfy all the needs of their audience at that time .

As a result , this body of Arab scholars and critics introduced genres of a western nature as alternatives of the old – fashioned Arabic rhetoric .

Of course , those alternatives were almost a copy of the European approaches which stemmed from a completely different world.

This paper tackles the efforts of the innovators who hurriedly accused the Arabic rhetoric of being sterile and called for an alternative that should replace the well – established Arabic rhetoric instead of modernizing or improving it .

Among the scholars in question are Jabr Dhomitt form Lebanon and Abdul- Aziz Al- Bishri and Ahmed Ameen from Egypt .
