Abstract EN

The main goal of this study was to examine the effect of some young people’s selection criteria to select their future spouses, to shed light on the most important theories that explain marriage selection, and understand and the variables that affect this process such as sex, income, place of residency and academic specialization etc.

The study was carried out in the second semester of 2011 and included a sample of (N=420) students from The Jordan university.

Data were collected by a questionnaire that was especially designed to fulfill the aims of this study.

The study showed that the criteria of mate selection in Jordan are similar to other universal results found in other studies.

Study’s results revealed that both males and females agreed on the importance of work and employment in the the selection criteria.

However, as for the main preferences beauty came in the first place, followed by religiosity and good manners in the second place while class and religious extremism came last.

Finally, it appears that males in Jordan as the rest of the world are more interested in beautiful young women while girls prefer rich and employed men.

The study did not reveal any significant differences due to the remaining variables.
