Abstract EN

The heart (al-qalb) is a fluid reality, changing in accordance with the appearance of Divine Manifestations.

The flux it entertains, in terms of behavioral accidents, discloses the very movement of the essence of human meaning (al-lubb).

The action of the heart is what generates the human identity, for it represents the human nature that was constituted through (1) the meditations of the self, (2) the epistemic extrapolations of the “intelligent heart” (al-fuʾād), and (3) the insights, into reality, of the heart itself.

The heart, moreover, is multi-faceted: one of its faces turns towards the body (the clay), another towards the universal meaning of the rational soul, a third towards the individuated personal identity, and still another face associates with the light of God.

In the man of perpetuity, these faces come to an intricate balance, for he is the possessor of an isthmic (barzakhī) heart which combines the spirit with the clay; it is this heart which entitles him to the tawḥidīvision, and to the gifts of fiṭrī knowledge and Divine trus
