Abstract EN

This study discusses an important issue concerning the possible meanings of the syntactic pattern (istaf’ala) in the Holy Quran.

It shows that while some of the meanings of this pattern are fairly explicit, others may be implicit thus requiring a greater effort to infer.

The latter have been referred to by Arab syntacticians and scholars of jurisprudence as “the enriched forms”.

The study has also shown that the rule which states that “an increase in form should indicate an additional meaning” applies consistently to all lexical items and syntactic patterns used in the Quran due to the miraculous nature of this holy book.

Such an issue requires further investigation to dig out the hidden meanings in those forms.
