Abstract EN

This paper aims at investigating two main elements pertaining to poetic texts.

It first discusses the concept of poetry, the development of this concept across history and the impact of this development on the criteria adopted in assessing the poetic value of a given text (poem).

Then it brings into focus the main characteristics of the language of poetry in particular and literary texts in general as being some of the essential tools whereby a poet can effectively express feelings and ideas and paint pictures.

In the course of the discussion, many examples of Arabic and English poetic texts, old and modern, are cited and discussed to support the arguments put forward.
