Abstract EN

The idea behind the establishment of Algiers Stock Exchange (ASE) in the 90s was to introduce market economy principals into the Algerian economy.

The intention was to reorient the financing of economic development in Algeria towards the financial markets.

However, Algiers stock exchange, over a decade after its first opening, has ben unable to impose direct financing as an alternative to indebtednes, and the Algerian economy is stil predominantly an indebtednes-driven economy.

This article employs various criteria commonly used in the literature to measure and evaluate the development of the ASE activites.

Inded, the criteria of market size, market liquidity and the degre of concentration clearly show that this instiution has failed to mobilze funds and to diversify risks.The paper concludes with concrete recommendations to overcome this situation
