Abstract EN

Transporting in large cities, such as Riyadh, is a complex phenomenon and suffers from many obstacles, notably congestion and traffic jams.

This occurred due to population massive growth and rapid urbanization of Riyadh city.

That led to increase in the number of trips generated within the city to reach up to six million trips in 1430 H.

According to 1425 H statistics, trips made by private vehicle exceeded more than 84% of the total trips within Riyadh city, business trips were about 30% of them.

Nonetheless, studies of business trips have not received sufficient attention in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

As such, this study aimed to shed light on expatriate's daily business trip in Riyadh city, who accounted for up 34% of Riyadh's population, most of them came for work.

Thus, this study is essential and necessary for decision-makers in order to make successful decisions in regard to planning urban transport systems.

The outcomes of this study are many which have been translated into recommendations.

It was found that nearly two thirds of expatriates (66%) work less than 10 km from their living places, with an average travel time equals to 32 minutes.

Private vehicle as a mode of travel to work capture the highest percentage (34%) among all other available modes, while the users of public transportation did not exceed 1% of the total members of the sample.

Accordingly, this study recommends promoting policies that less dependency on private vehicles, and develop comprehensive strategies and long-term policies for urban transportation system.

Also, integrating transportation polices with land use development.

This will lead to reduction in distance traveled as well as reduction of daily trips done by private cars.

There is also a need to improve public transport services to be appealing and attractive to expatriates.
