English Abstract

The Structure of the Study I have divided it into an introduction, prelude and two chapters: The introduction comprises: (Reasons for Choice of Research – Importance of Research – Aims and Objectives of Research – Research Problem – Parameters of Research – Research Methodology – Previous Studies – Difficulties encountered by the Researcher – Structure of Research).

The prelude comprises: Europe: the land and people.

Here I focused on five points: with respect to the first point I spoke about the natural geography of Europe, with respect to the second point about the population composition of Europe, with respect to the third point about religious life in Europe, with respect to the fourth point about the history of the entry of Islam into Europe, and I concluded the prelude with the fifth point which pertains to the areas in which the Muslims are centered in Europe.

The first chapter which I have entitled “the Islamic Centers and their Efforts in Propagating Islam in Europe”, and it comprises four sections.

In the first section I discussed the rise of Islamic organizations and centers.

I started off the section by defining “organization” and “center” and stated the differences between the two.

Thereafter, I discussed the historical background behind the establishment of the Islamic organizations and centers.

This I followed up with a discussion of the aims and objectives of these organizations and centers and the obstacles that they encountered.

I also devoted some time to the importance of registering these organizations and centers in terms of conditions and requirements in accordance with western laws.

I talked about the legal structure for the regulation of religious affairs, the registration requirements of Islamic organizations and establishments, their legality and conditions.

This I followed up with the advantages that can be procured from such registration like the freedom to perform acts of worship, religious education in schools, religious freedom and the labour law, defending one’s rights, cultural outreach, Arabic instruction to non-Arab Muslims, and all other areas of activity at these organizations that serve to ground the Islamic civilizational and cultural message in European society.

In the second section I discussed the efforts and work of these Islamic organizations and centers in the social field, the preservation of the Islamic identity, and defending the rights and issues of Muslim minorities.

As for the third section I devoted it exclusively to the da‘wah efforts of the Islamic organizations and centers in establishing the Islamic institutions and mottos, Islamic learning, training and media.

Thereafter, I proceeded to discussing their efforts in propagating Islam amongst the European masses.

I talk about the obligation of Muslim minorities to spread the da‘wah of Islam, and the foundations from which the calling of non-Muslims to Islam is launched as well as the impact of one’s conduct in inviting non-Muslims to Islam focusing on the Islamic middle road / moderation and how this middle road features in highlighting the defining characteristics of Islam.

In the fourth section I make reference to the da‘wah efforts of these Islamic organizations and centers via contact and communication with the Islamic world, as well as contact and communication with other Islamic organizations and centers, and contact and communication with local organizations that operate in Europe.

I gave the example of the Islamic Center in Copenhagen.

I then discussed the hope and future with respect to laying down the steps for the co-existence and mutual living together of Muslims and Europeans in Europe.

The second chapter which I have devoted to the Islamic Center in the city of Brescia in Italy as a case study.

Here my research led me to divide this chapter into a prelude and two sections.

In the prelude the discussion revolved around Italy: the land and people.

I opened the discussion with a brief word on the geography, population and economy.

I then proceeded to sketch a picture of the contemporary Italian from the point of view of religion and work.

I also went into the history of Islam’s entry into Italy, the strata that the community of Muslim emigrants is composed of, and the number of Muslims.

In the first section I talked about the reason for selecting the Islamic Center based in Brescia and the how it was established.

In the second section I discussed the administrative structure of the center, and what it is composed of.

The third section I devoted exclusively to the center’s da‘wah efforts in the area of teaching and media, its social activities, propagation of Islam, and establishment of Islamic institutions and mottos.

This I followed up with a treatment of the results of a field study of some of the members of the Muslim emigrant community in Brescia.

The conclusion of the research essay dealt with the most important results and recommendations that I have arrived at based on my methodological, inductive, descriptive, analytical and historical study.

Thereafter, I mentioned the references which I had consulted in writing this research essay.

This I followed by providing the indices that facilitate finding the desired information.

I thank Allah – Glory to Him – Who has conferred upon me – out of His Grace and Generosity – the blessing to complete this study.

I ask Allah Most High to make it sincerely and purely for His Noble Countenance, to make its benefit widespread and to benefit me through it on the Day of Judgment.

He is the Most Generous of those who are asked, and the Greatest of those in whom we put our hope.

May Allah further bestow many praises and salutations upon our master, Muhammad.
