English Abstract

Master Research Summary Entitled: "Al-Damghani’s Dictionary for the meanings of the Holy Qur’an" Translation from Arabic to English Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, prayers and peace be upon the Seal of Prophets and Messengers.

Allah, the Sublime says in His Holy Book : "We have not sent you but as a (Messenger) to all Mankind, giving them glad tidings, and warning then (against sin), but most men know not," (Saba / 28).

It is the duty of all Muslims at any place and time to call the message of Islam to non-Muslims using the appropriate language, giving them glad tidings and warnings, such that they recognize this message and know their fate.

I reckon myself as one of these Muslims to whom this duty is vented, as my specialization is in a language far from the language of the Holy Qur'an and my desire in continuing my studies in my specialization language has encouraged me and given me the incentive to try to translate the meanings of the Holy Qur'an terms into English to be easily understood by English speakers, whether Muslims or non-Muslims.

The purpose for this is to attract all people to the Holy Qur'an.

I was encouraged and assisted much by finding a great dictionary, belonging to the scholar and interpreter Abu Abdullahi Al-Hussayin Ibnu Mohammed Al-Damghani Al-Bagdadi Al-Hanafi (400 h).

He came from to Damghan, a place between Al-Ree and Nisapoore, in which he was born.

The book was entitled: "Islaahu-Al-Wujooh Wal Nazaair fil Qur'an Al-Kareem" i.e.

" Reform of aspects and similes in the Holy Qur'an".

The book gives definitions to the meanings of Qur'anic terms, using a combination of the lexical method in ordering the terms and the changeable concepts of the same terms, according to their usage in the Holy Qur'an verses.

This renders Al-Damaghani's book one of great benefit, which supercedes the other dictionaries that deal with the meaning of the term without relating it to its position in the text and language style.

This does not prohibit the reader from slipping into errors due to the incompatibility between the lexical meaning of the term and its meaning in the Holy Qur'an, which could be different from place to place in the verses.

This type is found in many contemporary dictionaries, some of which are mentioned in the introduction.

It is not a secret that the greatness of Al-Damghani's book gave me the justification to rename the book in such a way as to be related to its author.

It could easily have been titled "Qamus Al-Damghani" i.e.

Al-Damghani's Dictionary.

Al-Damghani, in his book's introduction, said : "I thought about the book of Muqaatil Ibnu Sulayman about the aspects of the Qur'an, and other books, but I found these books missing many letters of Qur'an of different aspects (meanings).

Therefore, I authored a book containing what these authors mentioned and what they left behind.

I made its chapters according to the lexical letters to be easily read and easily kept in mind".

Through following the author's method, it is clear that he used to get the root of the word, to mention the different aspects of that word in the Holy Qur'an and then he clarifies these aspects and mentions the subject of these aspects (meanings) in the Holy Qur'an, giving evidence for the intended meaning.

He would mention the surah and verse without mentioning the verse number, and he would mention one or more letters in one chapter.

Due to the preciseness and clearness of Al-Damghani's method, I desired to use the same method in my translation, adding only the verse number, and giving a separate chapter for each letter.

The chapters then, reached seventeen, instead of ten, and the translation's terms reached (1415) terms.

In my translation, I sought advise in many translations and authentic dictionaries which are outstanding and acknowledged in the Islamic and Arab worlds, particularly the translations and dictionaries of : The late Mohammad Pickthall, the late Mohammad Ali Shakir, Abdalla Yousif Ali, Dr.

Abdalla Abbas Al-Nadawi and other trusted scholars of translation.

This study included the translation of the first ten chapters, allocated for the letters from (Al-Hamza to Al-Dha), hoping that I could complete the letters in the doctorate study.

The translation was forwarded by an introduction, telling about the different aspects of the subject, then an introductory chapter in three themes.

The first theme was allocated for the definition of the author, the second for his book and the third for the translation.

The study, therefore is basically composed of a study and a translation, in addition to the appendices and indices.

May Allah give thanks to any one who contributes in the emerge of this great work.

May Allah give us all success and grace.

Finally : By that means, I have finished from translating the first part of Al-Damghani's Dictionary, I pray to the Glorified Allah if I performed this work successfully, so I aim with it for the sake of Him to serve the Sharia of Islam and Muslims.

Also, I pray to the Glorified Allah to make this work be crowned by success, to be helpful to man, to guide who is looking for the right way, to forgive for everyone who thought and helped in preparing this research, and everyone who read it and supervised or reformed from what may blemish it from mistakes or oversight.

So, perfection is just for the Glorified Allah, Allah amen, O! the Lord of the Worlds.
