English Abstract

The objective of this study is to develop a mathematical model to the evaporators of multi effect desalination plant. In this research a mathematical model based on the design and performance parameters of the plant, mass and energy balances for the streams flowing through each stage of the (MED) unit to predict the performance of the unit in terms of energy requirements. The models take into account dependence on stream properties like temperature and salinity.

Analysis was performed as a function of the number of effects, the heating steam temperature, vapor condensate, the temperature of the brine blow down, the temperature difference of heat exchanger, the specific heat transfer area, the thermal performance ratio, condenser area, the conversion ratio, the specific flow rate of the cooling water and the unit product cost. To validate a mathematical model, the different sea water temperatures, (14° C), (22° C) and (27° C).According to these three temperatures, the performance of Zuara plant was estimated theoretically and results were tabulated.

The actual performance of the plant, according to the temperatures was presented and compared to the theoretical one.

The difference between the theoretical and actual performance is about (5 %) which indicates that the mathematical model can be used to estimate the performance of Zuara plant
