English Abstract

This study concerns with the strength (CBR) of compacted granular soils when used as road pavement materials (Base, Subbase or Embankment).

The aim of this research was to investigate the strength (CBR) of compacted granular soils and to use a chart that considered the strength of these soils.

In the study granular soils samples taken from road pavement have been compacted at wide range of initial state (i.

e.

water content and dry density) then using laboratory equipment to enable the measurement of the CBR of these soils.

The tests results show that the strength of these soils is greatly influenced by the initial dry density and water content of the soil as well as the testing conditions.

Analysis of the results indicated that it is possible to combine the initial state parameters such as dry density, water content and void ratio in a way reflecting the influence of each of them on unsoaked CBR.

It was found that saturation due to soaking has great influence on the CBR values of compacted granular soils.

Therefore, the factor in the soaking state used was formed by a combination of saturated dry density, saturated water content and the amount of swelling during the soaking period.

The analysis of results proved that these factors have a very good linear relationship with soaked or unsoaked CBR.

Based on this result, a charts suitable for evaluation and design of compacted granular soils as well as field compaction control was illustrated.
