Abstract EN

This study is aimed at identifying the attitudes of the students of first secondary grade of Muscat Governorate towards the geography book of maps and natural systems of the earth.

The researcher designed an attitudes scale consisting of (28) items distributed over five dimensions on a Likert Scale.

The reliability coefficient was computed (Alpha 0.85).

The study sample consisted of (494) students (males & females) in the first year secondary in Muscat Governorate in the academic year of 2000 / 2001.

T- test, ANOVA, and Scheffe' test of post-comparison were used when necessary/.

The results of the study showed that the first year secondary students (male and female) had positive attitudes towards the book of geography of maps and natural systems of the earth.

The results also showed that males had more positive attitudes than females and that the attitudes of high achievers were more positive than other students' attitudes.

In the light of these results the researcher proposed some recommendations and suggestions as: to continue to develop the above-mentioned geography textbook; investigate the causes of low positive attitudes among girls; study the factors which affect students achievement and positive attitudes.
