Abstract EN

The purpose of the study is to determine the perception of the Faculty of Education students (Science and Maths specialists) of Sultan Qaboos University - Sultanate of Oman, of the level of scientific literacy and its relation to gender, year of study and GPA (academic achievements).

The population of the study was 305 students from third and forth year students who were registered during the 2000 - 2001 academic year from two branches at the Faculty of Education; science and mathematics, whereas the sample was 161 students who answered the questionnaire completely.

A (34) items (Likert - scale) type questionnaire with seven scale grading distributed into four domains was constructed and validated through a panel of judges.

The reliability for internal consistency was conducted for the questionnaire using Cronbach - a (0.889).

The results revealed that the students’ response was high concerning scientific literacy.

However, concerning open - ended questions it is clear that students do not know exactly the right meaning of the Scientific Literacy.

Furthermore, it was showed that girls have better response regarding the items of Scientific Literacy.

The findings showed that there was no significant difference among students’ responses regarding their GPA and their specialization.

In the light of the findings, a special course for scientific literacy should be tailored to meet the needs of students at Sultan Qaboos University with emphasis on the four domains of scientific literacy
