Abstract EN

This study aims to investigate the possible implication of the morphological case marking shift between Classical and Modern Linguists.

Traditional grammarians assumed that the shift of the case markes from the final position in a word to a previous position is one to a number of reasons such as the omitting of the glottal stop in final positions, to mark the six nouns (i.e.

a class of particular nouns ending with long vowels) for case, and achieving achieve the so called complete assimilation between two adjacent identical consonants.

Building on previous analyses of the phenomenon, the study concludes that the morphological case marker shift is a useful means which helps reduce the effect of consonant cluster and omit the glottal stop in final position.

Assuming that the long vowel -uu in the six nouns is not a case marker, some traditional grammarians argue that these nouns are inflected for case by markers which are shifted.

The morphological case markers are also shifted in other contexts to allow complete assimilation.
