Abstract EN

Currently, Jordan suffers from severe water shortages and lack of arable lands which requiers strict management of the available land and water resources.

There are 88 olive oil pressers which are mainly scattered over around 16.5 % of the area of Jordan, where the main watersheds, both surface and underground , are located .

Liquid wrastes resulting from olive oil extraction pose a potent threat to soil and water resources (surface and underground) in Jordan.

Field observations show that water and soits exposed to liquid waste residues attain higher BOD , TDS , and PH values than adjacent water and soils which are not subjected to the residues .

These findings indicate that liquid residues are expected to pollute about 697 million of surface and undergound water per annum.

It is found that three river basins, namely Zarqa, AL-arab and Qufranja, suffer the most deleterious consequences of these olive oil pressers.
