Abstract EN

The Town of Mu'tah is located at about 15 Km.

south of al-Karak District in Jordan.

Although, several European travelers visited this town, no previous excavations were held at this site.

The name of Mu'tah appeared clearly in the Islamic periods, because of the well known battle of Mu'tah, which occurred on its land.

The Importance of the first season of excavations at this site was the discovering of the core of a Byzantine cemetery.

The archaeological and epigraphical data showed that the inhabitants of Mu'tah during the Byzantine period were Christian Arabs.

Furthermore, those people played an important role in political, economical and religious aspects in the southern parts of Jordan as well as between the Arabian Peninsula and the Bilad al-Sham during the Byzantine and early Islamic periods.
