Abstract EN

This paper deals with 8 ancient names of Oman.

It concentrates on linguistic origins and geographical and historical aspects of these names.

The eighth names refer to the Omani Peninsula or parts of it during several periods.

The names are: Magan: appeared in texts of Mesopotamia connecting with Dilmun (Bahrain and North east Arabia) and Melluhha (The Sind Valley).

It was famous for its stone and copper.

Maka: it is the Persian distorted of Magan and Makkan.

This term was used during the Achamenid period identifying with Oman.

Qadi: appeared from the 7th and 6th centuries B.C.

especially at the time of the New Babylonian Kingdom.

It is also mentioned in some Assyrian texts.

Maketa: this phrase is mentioned in some Classical sources.

It is identified with the Musandam Peninsula (Ru'us al-Jibal).

It seems that this name is driven from Maka.

Mazun: it is of Persian origin used during the Parthian period and became common at the time of Sassanians.

Beth Mazunnayye: this name was mentioned in some Syrac sources connecting with the Nestorian oresence in the area.

Umana: was a port or culture in the Omani Peninsula referred to by Pliny and the suthor of the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea.

liman: this is the pure Arabic name of the Peninsula which has special meaning in Arabic which is travel towards Oman.

However Muslim historians and geographers mention that Oman relate to Uman bin Ibrahim.
