This working paper was presented in a workshop organized by the National Center of Curriculum and Educational Research in Bakht er Ruda.
The workshop was attended by 18 examination directors from different state.
The paper introduces the histrorical development of evaluation, it defines evaluation as a process of decision making of whether the desired educational objectives are or not attained and the program is modified accordingly.
The paper differentiated between many evaluation strategies, the most important ones are formative evaluation which contributes to modification of formation of program.
The other one is summative evaluation, which summarizes merits of program.
The paper concentrated on student evaluation especially on cognitive outcomes.
It also defines th concept of assessment and its relation to evaluation.
Special consideration has been given to principles, which must be followed by the teacher to construct and develop tests, which measure student attainment in cognitive domain.
The paper is concluded by some suggestions to improve student’s evaluation in Sudanese schools.
