Abstract EN

The study deals with the cultural relationship between Muslims and Christians in al-Andalus as they are portrayed in the literature of Abbeys.

Unfortunately, few of the works of the Andalusian bellelettrists dealing with the Abbeys have come down to us, but a study of those pieces available shows that those Abbeys were originally for monks to devote their time for adoration in full monastic!sm life.

The function of those Abbeys was to serve religion as places of adoration; then they became places for recreation, diversion and impudicity.

Such new functions offered the Andalusian men of letters, who used to visit those Abbeys for entertainment, an opportunity to observe at close range Christian life.

Therefore, those men of letters presented description of Christian community in Iberian Peninsula under control of Islam, viz rituals and relgious customs, wineshops, and the attributes of the beauty of nuns, and cupbearers.

One can conclude that the study reveals that the Andalusian men of letters employed old established literary forms to express fresh experiences, new perceptions and sentiments peculiar to them, as Andalusian.

The study also reveals that the Christians were allowed to pursue and maintain their own religious and cultural practices and retain their ethnic identities.

In addition, it sheds light on the close relationships between Muslims and Christians through daily contact, which allowed Muslims to visit Churches and Abbeys.
