Abstract EN

This study aims at mearusing the fear of traffic accidents in Jordan.

It tests the impact of the demographical variables, victimization and per- ceived traffic risk on fear of traffic accidents.

A sample of 1674 citizens is chosen, distributed on (11) govemorates, of whom 986 (59%) are males and 676 (41 %) are females.

A questionnaire is developed and usd as a research tool containing a Fear of Traffic Accident Scale (single item scale).

Secondary analysis using official data is used for the period 1979-1992.

Analyses show that the total traffic accidents are (222390) incidents.

These accidents are responsible for (5819) deaths and (125321) injuries.

Results show a monthly average of (1324) accidents; (35) deaths and (746) injuries.

Significant differencs are found between months attributed to the total number of accidents; death and injuries (F=7; 3 and 16 Alpha 0.0001 respectively).

Findings of the survey study show that the majority (86%) of the participants perceive the risk of being victim to the traffic accidents.

All different social groups are afraid of being victims to the traffic acci- dents.

No significant differences are found between these groups in their perception of being victims to the traffic accidents.

Moreover, No sig- nificant differences are found between rural and urban areas in the fear of traffic accidents.
