Abstract EN

This study aims to analyze the effect of learning curve on the competitiveness of Phosphate and Potash Industries in Jordan.

This analysis was conducted by estimating the impact of cumulated experience on average cost and labor productivity.

Indeed, as the learning curve model suggests, the cumulated experience is indexed by cumulated output on one hand and the stock of knowledge that embodied in capital goods on the other hand.

The results showed weak competitiveness for both products, since average cost increases as cumulated output and stock of knowledge increase.

This result emerged because the growth rate of cost exceeds the growth rate of production, which, in turn, ascribed to: wage and production duty policies, idle capacity, and government intervention.

To develop the potential competitiveness for these two important industries and for the Jordan industry as a whole, the study recommends: Reconsideration of production duties for Jordanian industry, Applying cost control methods, especially for wage, energy use, administrative cost, and medical expense, and Developing production efficiency through training programs.
