Cowpea seeds were geminated at 25°C for 12,24,48 and 72 hours.

The flatus caused by the raffmose family of oligosaccharides were reduced significantly by germination of the seeds.

Germination beyond 48 hours resulted in a complete disappear ance of raffmose, stachyose and verbascose.

The 24 hour germination is recommended as a reasonably good treatment for cowpeas for flatus production as considrable losses of raffmose and stachyose occur during this period.
