Abstract EN

A field experiment was carried out at the University Farm, Central Jordan Valley, during the 1990/91 cropping season, l ive field bean cultivars were grown in a plastic house in order to study the incidence and severity of fungal and bacterial diseases which attak beans, and to explore eultivai responses to infection with these diaseases.

Four recently introduce*! cultivars (Green bacI^Lanee, Lolitta and strike) and a locally developed bean cultivar were used’ The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with four replicates.

The results indicated that four fungal diseases (powdery mildew, Rhizoctonia root rot, leaf rust and sclerotinia rot) and three bacterial diseases (common blight, brown spot and stem knot) infect these bean cultivars.

lt has been found that powdery mildew, sclerotinia-rot, eommon blight and brown spot were the most important diseases.

Their incidence ranged from 19 to 92% and severity bacterial diseases are of low levels in incidence dary diseases.

Differences in response to infection among cultivars were found.

Irrespective of the differences in disease incidence and severity between cultivars, the c.v.

Strike and Lolitta were significantly more tolerant than local beans and other cultivars.

Strike and Lolitta showed significantly low disease incidence and severity except for bacterial stem knot in Lolitta.

Green back and Lance showed less tolerance to diseases however, the local bean cultivar was highly susceptible fo all diseases except for stem knot.
